Director of Public Works

The Director of Public Works manages and oversees the activities and operations of the Public Works Department.  The City of Sealy Public Works Department includes water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, natural gas distribution, street repair and maintenance, parks and recreation, and building services.  This position is under the administrative direction of the City Manager. The team leader in this role is responsible for preparing and administering the departmental budget; coordinating with other City Departments and outside agencies on various projects, preparing and submitting reports to local, State, and Federal regulatory agencies, and performing other work related duties as assigned.  Basic computer skills and knowledge are necessary in this position.  This candidate must have a strong managerial skill set regarding time management, prioritization, and ability to effectively delegate authority in order to ensure the timely completion of a demanding workload.  


Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License and must meet City’s driving standards.
  • Preferred Bachelor degree in civil or mechanical engineering, business, or public administration; or at least 10 years of experience as a public works director in a similar size city or at least 10 years of experience as an assistant public works director for a larger city.
  • Preferred Certificate of Completion as a water and wastewater operator, Grade C issued by appropriate regulatory agency
  • Mandatory drug testing as required by gas utility regulations
  • Obtain or acquire Certified Flood Plain Administrator within one year of employment
  • Obtain or acquire accredited training courses in street construction and maintenance, water and wastewater system distribution, collection and maintenance
  • Must comply with gas utility operator qualification plan
  • Ten (10) years of experience in the construction, operation, and maintenance of utilities, park and recreation and building maintenance departments, including experience in a responsible administrative position
  • Bachelor's or higher degree in engineering is preferred.
  • Must pass a drug test, physical examination, and driver’s license check


Hourly salary range is: $30.43 to $41.07 per hour (negotiable with experience).
