Getting to Know Sealy
The following is an excerpt taken from a presentation given by Tumbleweed Smith at the annual Sealy Chamber of Commerce banquet held on Thursday, February 7, 2008.

Tumbleweed Smith has interviewed some true Texas characters and assembled the largest private collection of oral history in the United States. He writes a syndicated weekly newspaper column and teaches broadcasting at the university level. As the creator and producer of The Sound of Texas, one of the longest running syndicated radio programs in Texas, Tumbleweed seeks fascinating people who embody the spirit of the Lone Star State and brings them into the homes and hearts of thousands.
It’s wonderful to be in the most historic area of the state…the true birthplace of Texas. I’ve interviewed lots of people around here.. in Cat Spring, New Ulm, Industry and various other places in Austin county, all filled with fascinating characters and independent thinkers.

I have truly enjoyed getting to know the city of Sealy. It started as a railroad town and was named for a railroad man. Trains left Sealy hauling agricultural products from area ranches and farms owned by German and Czech settlers. Those early citizens of Sealy were a hearty bunch. They were not scared off by floods or hurricanes or the loss of the railroad’s headquarters. They stayed and started businesses, some dealing with the essentials like mattresses and brooms. Sealy became the largest city in Austin County. It’s the home of Eric Dickerson, military vehicles, beef, rice and corn and vast reserves of oil and natural gas.

This area of Coastal Texas provides a mosaic of forest and prairie. Deer, ducks, geese, mourning dove and bobwhite quail thrive here. Hickory, live oak and black walnut trees decorate the countryside.

Sealy is a city of enterprising young people, dedicated to keeping the city a good place to live. Downtown is getting a facelift. The school system encourages students to enjoy learning.. the average attendance is better than 96 percent and test scores are the highest they’ve been.

You’ve got a prime location and an average temperature of 68 degrees. With its history of excellence and a future of progress, it’s no wonder that so many people are falling in love with Sealy.
